Elizabethan Stitches

Jacqui is best known for her work with braidmaking, notably the Japanese technique of Kumihimo. However, in recent years she has turned her mind to researching early English braids and other textile techniques from this era. Her detailed studies of surviving artefacts has revealed the truth about stitch structure and how early work differs from the stitches in use today. Some of her findings have been published in two books: Sweet Bags and Elizabethan Stitches.

These detail some of her academic and practical research, all backed up with case studies of actual objects providing the visual evidence. Here is a unique opportunity to meet Jacqui, learn about old techniques and see some early embroidery (by kind permission of the Embroiderers’ Guild).

The Art of Lace

"The history of lace-making", it has been said, "is the history of an art". Lace is not, like embroidery, an ornamented fabric, but is itself an ornament; the whole pattern is the fabric, and the fabric is the pattern.

This delightful exhibition explores the ancient craft of lace-making, both by hand and machine, including Needle lace; Cutwork, Bobbin lace; Crochet lace; Guipure and many others.

That was it, absolutely hooked on this stress-free rhythmical craft that produces such beautiful yarn." Come along and Maggie will introduce you to the art of spinning

Hidden Histories

For this year’s ICHF tour the Quilters' Guild of the British Isles has put together a collection of quilts that commemorate an occasion or remind the quilter of a time when something significant happened. Maybe one of the fabrics holds precious memories, or has been recycled because it has particular significance. Or perhaps they have had an experience, heard a story or visited a place that had such an impact that they were inspired to make a quilt. This exhibition showcases the ways they have interpreted the title ‘Hidden Histories’.

Renowned fashion designer Jasper Conran and Irish Milliner Phillip Treacy faced the challenge of bringing a new look to a Broadway musical whose visual style had hardly changed in 40 years, when they designed the costumes for Simon Callow’s production of My Fair Lady.

The central flower theme is vividly bought to life in the Ascot scene where the ladies parade with huge hats fashioned as roses, tulips, pansies and lilies.

Jane Austen - Fashion & Films

In recent years both TV and film period drama has become increasing popular, with some of the best being adapted from Jane Austen’s novels. This exhibition brings together a collection of star-studded garments, from BBC’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’, starring Colin Firth; the Oscar winning film ‘Sense and Sensibility’, featuring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet; plus the wonderful ‘Emma’, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

Costumes from Jane Austen's period dramas will be on display at Hobbycrafts,NEC, Birmingham.

Fabric Manipulation

From the traditional smocking found on 18th century workwear to haute couture garments and intricately gathered Japanese 'shibori' techniques, this exhibition explores how people have taken a length of cloth and gathered, pleated and stitched it in innovative ways to form new shapes and dimensions; rather like fabric ‘Origami’.

An exhibition of how people have manipulated fabric over the years.

Smocking Treasures of the WI

This exciting collection is on loan from the NFWI Textile Archives, housed at Denman College, and has never been exhibited before in its entirety. The written history on how and why they have these smocks is very scant, but they do know that some of them belong to the Alice Arms Collection, and that others have been donated over the years. Alice Arms was a craft Advisor for the NFWI from 1923-1939 and among some of the books that she wrote were 'Plain Sewing' and 'English Smocks'.

The word Smock is of Anglo-Saxon derivation meaning "Shift" or "Chemise", and it is from these days that the smock of rural England dates. Smocking is a traditional English craft of peasant origin, which was used for many centuries to decorate garments.

On display from the NFWI Textile Archives, this exciting collection of Smocking Treasures can be seen in its entirety at Hobbycrafts,NEC, Birmingham.

Royal School of Needlework

The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is the international centre for teaching, practicing and promoting hand embroidery across a wide range of techniques, based at Hampton Court, which was famously worked on the Royal Wedding dress last year.

The RSN stand at Creative Stitches showcases work by Certificate course students from its Scottish satellite-teaching centre at the Glasgow Art Club.  RSN teaching in Scotland is now firmly established and Tutor Helen McCook will be on hand to answer questions about the course and students will demonstrate their embroidery skills.  Also on display will be students’ work from the RSN’s other UK satellites in Durham, Rugby and Bristol and from its base at Hampton Court Palace, including the work from the RSN Degree Programme.

Thinking of trying embroidery? Why not sign up for an RSN ‘taster’ Day Class at the Glasgow Art Club to learn stumpwork, Jacobean crewelwork, whitework or ribbonwork.  For more information visit www.royal-needlework.org.uk/learn or T: 020 3166 6938

MADEIRA Logo

Madeira Embroidery Competition 2013

'Glimpses of Summer' is the theme for this year’s competition, which is supported by Flair magazine and Husqvarna sewing machines. Summer 2012 will certainly go down as one of the wettest summers on record, so we want you to raise our spirits and embroider your very own bit of sunshine, to remind us of what summer should be all about. It can be memories of childhood holidays on the beach, summers in other lands, or what you think typifies a quintessential British summer: cream tea’s on the lawn, glasses of Pimm’s, cricket on the green, tennis matches and ice cream. There’s a prize for each category winner and a superb prize of a Husqvarna Sapphire sewing machine and a Madeira Treasure Chest for the overall winner!

All entries will be displayed and judged at the show. For details on how to enter the competition CLICK HERE.

'Heartsease'

Ruth and Belinda have dreamed of a way that knitters and makers can extend care to children they have never met by sending them special heart shaped bags; these can be keepers of hope and safety in the form of words, pictures and small treasures.

Join us at ICHF shows where, with help from the UKHKA, you can be part of this huge new project 'heartsease', or send them direct to us at Ruth and Belinda. Kids Company know that children recover with unrelenting love, and that this can happen practically with your help; distance care from people with kindness and skill.

So come and join in the fun.
