You'd be mad to miss it…
All dedicated Design and Technology teachers and co-ordinators will want to visit the Design and Technology with ICT Education Show, 20-22 November, where a wealth of opportunities to listen, watch and join the action will leave you energised with inspiration. Read Show Guide opening comment from Sir James Dyson, Show Patron.
A Textile Feature Area at the centre of the show will demonstrate many new ideas for creative projects with fabric and threads. Best of all a hands-on area will let you get to grips with the possibilities of the latest sewing and embellishing machines from Viking Husqvarna and Pfaff,
whilst experimenting with a variety of ways to reclaim, re-use and recycle. Be sure to make your mark on the show's special project to create a stunning dress from an old parachute.
Further inspiration for recycling and sustainable design, in different media, can be gleaned by watching and talking to the Designers in Residence on Practical Action's stand.
For the thrill seekers amongst you there will be model car racing in our Race Track Area, including the live Central England regional final of F1 in Schools. Learn about a new model engineering challenge, GT in Schools, being developed in association with Jaguar and Denford, and hear a stimulating insight into Formula 1 motor sport from Red Bull Racing. For exciting, environmentally-friendly challenges for students, come and find out about Greenpower's selection of electric-car projects and solar-powered models from the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project.
Good Practice Demonstrations will bring you the best of ideas from education colleagues. Staff from Pearl Hyde Primary School will set some of their pupils a challenge to design and make a 'green toy' at D+T, whilst students and teachers from Finham Park School will demonstrate the 'be safe, be seen' electronics project which they have helped to develop. Loughborough University will illustrate the breadth of their activity in Design and Technology and we are very proud to be able to display a selection of the best work from this year's 'Made in Brunel' exhibition.
The Keynote Lecture 'Changes: D&T, the curriculum and the world we live in', given by the Chief Exectutive of the Design and Technology Association, Richard Green, will inspire you look to the future with renewed enthusiasm. This opens a packed programme of free seminars, delivered by many of the country's leading educationalists, which offers INSET opportunities not to be missed.
