D+T with ICT Education Show 2009: Helping prepare for the 2011 CurriculumOn the back of the conclusions from major primary and secondary school curriculum reviews, including those of Sir Jim Rose, this year's D+T with ICT Education Show 2009 will provide D&T and ICT teachers with the tools to respond to the new curriculum requirements prior to implementation in 2011. As the leading show of its kind, the 2009 show (19-21st November) will deliver informative talks from key industry experts, hands-on workshops for teachers and hundreds of the most cutting edge products and ideas from exhibitors covering a wide range of design & technology topics. Each year, the show creates the perfect atmosphere in which to discover how to bring subjects alive in the classroom and embrace the latest trends and equipment available to schools. Last year's show was a resounding success according to Show Organiser Andrew Morton of ICHF Events, who said, 'The enthusiasm, upbeat approach and dedication to the subject shown by visitors in 2008 shone through. Feedback was excellent and this year we are offering visitors even more features to inspire, with show patron Sir James Dyson and keynote speaker Richard Noble OBE only strengthening the show's calibre.' New on the programme this year will be dedicated food technology areas, as well as a renewed focus on textiles, engineering and interactive highlights including a full size replica car from the BLOODHOUND SCC PROJECT, which aims to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists with the designing and building a car capable of 1000 mph. Its presence will be thanks to Richard Noble OBE, the driving force behind the project and holder of the land speed record between 1983 and 1997 as well as the project director of the current land speed record, who will be the Show's opening speaker on Thursday 19th November. As part of the show's greater focus on Food technology, Sainsbury's Active Kids Get Cooking will feature as part of this new area. A collaborative initiative from Sainsbury's, the Design and Technology Association and the British Nutrition Foundation, it provides teachers with a framework, tools, advice and support to implement classroom cooking activities and challenges in line with the curriculum. The show will also feature a new concept for the textiles industry, responding to schools wanting to give their students a more 'hands on' taste of the textiles industry and a real taste of what a career in the fashion and textiles sector involves. Established by the Sector Skills Council for fashion and textiles, their Unzipped experience centres on an eight meter studio split into four areas where the students can try out industry activities in teams and is specially designed to complement the syllabus of GCSE textiles and the 14-19 Diplomas in Creative & Media, or Manufacturing & Product Design (textile route). The 'design' area allows students to design sketches to a set brief while students can use safe industry equipment (pick-meters, crockmeter and spray-tester) in the 'testing' area to test fabric durability and quality. The 'lay planning' area lets students produce a lay-plan using magnetic pattern pieces and the 'costing' area, students learn about how to cost garment components to a set budget. Charity Practical Action will return to promote sustainability within D&T with additional space to showcase a selection of award winning sustainable designs in their 'Designers in Residence' area, which generated a huge amount of interest in 2008. Thanks to a number of practical demonstrations from professional designers, visitors will be inspired with ideas for classroom activities and will be challenged to think about designing products that minimise landfill waste. Another popular feature returning in 2009 is the high octane area dedicated to the Formula 1 in Schools initiative. Project manager Dave Howes said of the 2008 show, 'The response by visitors was absolutely fantastic. We were busy throughout the show and it provided a great opportunity to bring our initiative alive among a perfect target audience. We were also encouraged by the number of next generation, trainee teachers at the show and their interest in F1 in schools.' They will be holding their Central England heats once again at this years show. In addition to the extensive exhibitor presence, there will be a dynamic seminar programme will provide teachers with insight and knowledge about the different subjects and topics with a highlight being Richard Noble's opening seminar on Thursday 19th November. Show consultant Bob Booth said, 'Each year the seminars harness the enthusiasm of teachers and support staff for the latest topical information, products and exemplars of good practice. Without exception primary, secondary, further and higher education teachers confirmed how important and interesting the variety of topics covered were in 2008, so in 2009 we intend to deliver an even more dynamic selection of speakers to help teachers prepare for the curriculum changes and of course to bring subjects alive.'
